Save Money on Heating and Insulation for the Average New Yorker

With the month of October comes the end of summer, and that means colder temperatures and higher heating bills. New York City apartments and housing units, especially those without sufficient insulation, can see heating bills skyrocket during the fall and winter months.
Provident Loan Society of New York has tips to save the most money this season on your heating bills and insulation.

Eliminate Your Drafts

Housing specialists recommend shoring up windows in your home to prevent cold drafts from entering your home. This can be done with plastic wrap that seals itself over the window.
By closing up gaps sometimes present in windows, heat from your home heating unit can’t escape, saving you money in excessive heating costs.
Housing specialists also recommend sealing up gaps in your front door that may also be letting the heat escape from your home. This will make your home even more energy efficient.

Rearrange Your Rugs and Furniture

It sounds simple, but rugs and furniture add another layer of insulation to your home. They also affect the flow of heat from your heating system into your home.
Housing specialists recommend moving furniture and rugs away from heating vents and air ducts. Since these fixtures can trap heat coming from your vents, the closer they are to the vents, the more heat you’ll end up needing to heat your home.
Conversely, moving furniture and rugs away from vents and air ducts means less hot air becomes trapped, thus heating your home more efficiently.

Don’t Be Afraid to Keep Things Chilly

The Department of Energy recommends keeping your thermostat at just 68 degrees in the winter for maximum heating efficiency. This may sound quite cold, but 68 degrees is found to be the optimal temperature for saving the most money on your energy bills during the winter.
The caveat, though, is keeping this temperature (or whatever temperature you decide on) consistent. That is, if you decide to heat it up to 76 for a few hours, and then change it back to 68, that can take up more energy than setting your thermostat at a consistent temperature.
